Hake belongs to the family Merlucciidae within the order Gadiformes. The average size of a hake is from 30 to 70 centimeters, but some individuals can exceed a meter and a half in length. The hake body is elongated, grayish with a silvery cast, and the sides and belly are lighter than the back. The mouth is large.
