Coho salmon has a short, thick tail stem. Its body is covered in bright silver scales, hence its American and Japanese name "silver salmon." Its back and top of the head are greenish; in some fish, it has a bluish hue. It sports faint, small black spots on the body and sides above the lateral line. Coho salmon has small teeth. Its body is stocky, and the tail stem is wide and short.
